Can You Be Flexible?

DeBary, FL.

63 deg. cloudy, Wind NW 6 MPH Gusts 26

Forecast = Mostly cloudy with showers likely. Highs around 68°F. West wind 8 to 15 MPH, gusting to 21 MPH. Chance of precipitation 70 percent.

Can you be flexible?

NO!  NO!! Not your body!!!

Can you be flexible enough to Full-time or even part-time for 5 or 6 months of the year? If you've been RVing for any length of time, I'm sure that you've had to be, or learn to be flexible with your plans.

Many years ago, when we first started Full-timing, we learned that you'd better allow for a mishap or two, anytime you're traveling or even staying in one place for awhile. Things just happen and there's nothing you can do about it.

If you can't adapt to these mishaps or delays and change your pans, you probably better not plan on RVing too much. Sometimes you can make up the time you lost for repairs or other unforeseen circumstances, but sometimes you just have to make a major plan change.

One of the first years that we were Full-timing, we had an accident in a parking lot South of Orlando. Jim made a hard right turn, the back of the MH swung out and hit a new Jeep Liberty and tore up the Jeeps fender and the plastic bumper on the back of the MH. It was the fist thing like that that had happened, Jim was really upset with himself, and to be honest, I thought our Full-timing days were over!!!

That little deal cost us 2 or 3 weeks of travel and a lot of plans had to be changed. We had to be flexible!

Then, there was time time that we were on our way to Oregon, via the northern route, (US 2). We were in the middle of  Montana, (about 20 or 30 miles East of Havre in the middle of nowhere), when the diesel engine just up and quit!!!!

Jim got it going again and we limped into Havre where a CG made space for us and a great mechanic worked on the MH for almost 2 days, but still didn't find the problem. To his credit, he knew he didn't find the problem and he only charged us for a few other minor items he found and repaired.

To make a long story short, we went to many different mechanics, (even a authorized repair shop), but no one could find the problem. Jim finally determined that if he didn't run anything electrical except the engine, the engine would keep running. We visited with Jeff and Heather in Oregon, but then instead of going down the coast and to a bunch of National Parks, we headed back to Florida where a very good mechanic, Lester, found the problem in about 30 minutes and repaired it for about $150.00!!!

A very big change of plans! We had to be flexible!!!!

As most of you know, back in August 2013, while we were in Illinois, Linda was diagnosed with cancer. We scrapped all our plans, headed to Florida and spent the next 11 months down here where Linda had surgery, chemo and radiation treatments. It also marked the end of our 12 1/2 years of  Full-timing.

A major change of plans!! We had to be flexible!!!!!

This summer, we were planning on going back out to Oregon again. But, Linda's eye problem required us to change our plans, yet again. It's OK though, we'll head up to Illinois to our favorite Campground and enjoy the summer there. Through the years, we've had a lot of bumps in the road, with that really big bump back in 2013. By comparison, this is just a little pebble in the road.

Another change of plans!! But it's OK, we're flexible!!!!!

Are You????

Did you know that there are 2,734,102 miles of paved public roads in the United Sates, with an additional 1,324,245 miles of unpaved public roads?

Working On Plan "G"

DeBary, FL.

59 deg. cloudy, no wind.

Forecast = Mostly cloudy with isolated showers. Highs around 70°F. North wind 4 to 12 MPH. Chance of precipitation 60 percent.

By 9:00 yesterday, Jim was out of the door and he and Big RED were on their way to Winn Dixie to buy some much needed groceries. The store wasn't very crowded at that time in the morning so the shopping went well and by a little after 10:00 Big RED was backing back into the carport.

About 1:00 Jeff called from Portland OR., Jim explained about Linda's eye problem and asked him if he thought that he and Heather could find time to come here for a visit in November or December?

To Jim's surprise, Jeff was very open to the idea and explained to Jim that this summer was turning out to be a very busy summer for he and Heather and in fact they were both wondering how they were going to be able to get everything done!!! He told Jim that some of Heather's family was coming for a visit, Heather needed to make a business trip and there were 2 or 3 other things that they wanted/needed to do during the summer.

So,  ,  ,  ,  , Jeff didn't know if Heather would be able to find time to fly down here, but he would like to come for a visit. In fact, he thought that maybe he could include going to see Mike, (his brother) up in North Carolina at the same time. Jim said that maybe, Jeff could fly to Mike's and we could swing by there on our way back to FL., pick him and Heather up and bring them down here to FL. He could then fly back to OR. from here.

Of course no real plans were made, but there are many options. Jeff will talk to Heather and they'll try to figure out when it would be best for them to come.

So, we will not be going to Oregon this summer. Instead, we'll go, (as previously planned), to Joe's in Virginia Beach, Mike's in Apex, NC., Roland and Louise's in Forest City, NC and then to the RV Dreams Reunion Rally in Marion, NC. Then, instead of heading out to Oregon, we'll take our time and work our way up to Rantoul, IL, where we'll spend most of the summer with a possible trip up to Wisconsin to see Linda's brother, (Glenn), and his family.

Of course while we're in Illinois, Linda will be able to go to see Dr. Gandhi whenever needed to get her eyes checked.

Sounds like a plan to me!!!! ;-)

All of this means that Jim is working on yet another plan for the summer. I think he's up to "Plan G" right now, but who knows, there may be more changes before summer gets here.

I'm sure glad that he's got the big eraser!!!   ;-)

A Point to Ponder: Why is a carrot more orange than an orange?

Linda's Doctor Visit and Is There A Change Of Plans Coming?

DeBary, FL.

61 deg. clear, no wind.
Forecast = Cloudy with showers. High 76F. Winds WSW at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 40%.

Linda had an appointment with her Ophthalmologist yesterday afternoon, so about 1:30, Big RED took Jim and Linda over to his office in Orange City. They did the normal tests and scans of her eyes and soon she was in Dr. Barnard's exam room where he informed her and Jim that from the scan, he determined that she needed another injection in her left eye. :-(  He showed Linda and Jim the scans and pointed out exactly where the problem was. After discussing the situation, Linda agreed that that was the best thing to do. So,  he gave her the injection and by about 3:00 or so, Big RED was pulling back into the carport here at the house.

Jim and Linda also discussed their travel plans for this summer with Dr. Barnard and he told Linda that he thought that she should be seeing an Ophthalmologist at least every 2 months.

Now, this would mean that she would have to try to find a doctor while traveling across the country on our way out to Oregon. Dr. Barnard told her that he would assist her in any way he could to find a qualified doctor and that if she and Jim would call him and tell him where they would be, (about 2 weeks ahead of time),  he would do what he could.

So,  ,  ,  ,  ,  ,  What to do????

Linda had a lot of anxiety before her first visit with Dr. Barnard, so, to say the least, she's not too keen on finding another doctor somewhere in Arizona or New Mexico on our way out West.  After returning here to the house, she and Jim were discussing the problem and they talked about different options.

First, Linda could just ignore the Doctor's recommendations and just wait until August when we would be getting to Illinois and see Dr. Gandhi when we arrived there.

Both Linda and Jim agreed that this was probably not the best option.

Second, they could go ahead and try to find a doctor while traveling, which would probably cause both Linda and Jim a lot of anxiety, especially since Linda really doesn't like going to new doctors she doesn't know, and, because of time restrictions, we really don't have a lot of leeway to be spending too much time looking for a doctor or waiting for an appointment.

Third, they could wait until next year to head out to Oregon, but they would really like to see Jeff and Heather before that. Plus, you never know what next year will bring.

Fourth, is the option of not going to Oregon this year, but instead, sending Jeff and Heather money to buy plane tickets and fly down here, possibly in November or December.

This option had some appeal to both Jim and Linda, so last night they tried calling Jeff to see if it would be possible for he and Heather to come. He wasn't home, but I'm sure he'll be calling back as soon as he can.

So,  ,  ,  ,  ,  ,  that's where we stand for now. We'll wait for Jeff to call and then tell him what is happening and what Jim and Linda are thinking. He and Heather may not be able to get away to come here. We'll just have to wait and see.

A Point to Ponder:  Why do banks charge you a "non-sufficient funds fee" on money they already know you don't have?

We Survived The Freezing Temperatures and Bad Dog

DeBary, FL.

53 deg. overcast, no wind.
Forecast = Sunny to partly cloudy. High 82F. Winds S at 5 to 10 mph.

We' survived the freezing weather we had down here in FL the other day. As far as I know, there were no freeze-ups here at the house or over at the CG where Nora is parked. Jim and Linda went over to check on Nora the next day and he said that everything seemed fine.

Today, the weather guessers are forecasting that we're going to have temperatures up in the 80's!!! I suppose soon I'll be whining about the temperature being too high. :-)

Nick Russell who publishes Nick's Blog that I follow almost every day and is the publisher of the Gypsy Journal Newspaper, has a blog called "Bad Nick", and that's where I got the idea of, from time to time,  naming some of my posts, "Bad Dog"!!!

I hope Mr. Russell doesn't mind that I stole his idea, but I just couldn't resist using it to vent some of my feelings about different subjects.

These posts are not meant to stir anything up but to just give my opinion on things that bug me. Your opinion may be different than mine and I respect that. I will not get into a discussion or argument about any of these things because I don't think that any of them, in the  whole scheme of things, are worth jeopardizing my friendship or relations with anyone.

Bad Dog!!!

Well, here we go.  There’s something that has been bothering me lately and I think it’s time I got it off of my chest!!!

I want to talk about the latest thing that’s happening at the Daytona Speedway concerning Kurt Bush.

Now, I want to start by saying that I really don’t like Bush much, because I don’t like his style of driving. But, I don’t think that what NASCAR is doing to him is right!!!

Kurt has not been proven guilty of anything!!! Yet, NASCAR has chosen to be judge and jury and suspend him indefinitely!!!  Now, I don’t know if he’s guilty or not, but I do think that until he’s proven guilty, he shouldn't be suspended.  Now, once there’s a trial with a jury, then as far as I’m concerned, let the cards fall where they may with him or anyone else.  If he is found guilty, then suspend him!!

What ever happened to “Innocent until proven guilty”?

In fact, in my opinion, I think that lately, this has been happening much too often. Its happened in the NFL, and it seems to be running throughout many of the different sports. It's also been happening with teachers and police officers, just to name a few professions.

All is takes is for 1 person to accuse someone of doing something, wrong. Then the media jumps on it, and in most cases the first thing that happens is that person is suspended or even fired!!

Just My Opinion!!!!

A Point to Ponder; You should not confuse your career with your life.

We're Moving and Freezing Temperatures

DeBary, FL.

29 Deg. clear, no wind.
Forecast today =  Sunny. Highs around 54°F. North northwest wind to 9 MPH.
Tonight: Mostly clear. Lows around 41°F. Northeast wind to 6 MPH.

Yep! We're moving!!!

I guess I knew it was going to happen pretty soon, and, I suppose it needed to happen before we headed out on our summer travels, but I think I'm going to miss being a South Dakotan.

A one point, last fall, Jim and Linda were still undecided if we wanted to become Florida residents or not, but then Alternative Resources, (Their mail forwarding service since 2001), was sold and became Dakota Post. Furthermore, Dakota Post is moving into a new facility, so that address is changing.

Now, if they would have stayed at their previous address, I really think that Jim and Linda would have stayed with them and kept on using their mail service for at least a couple more years. But, they didn't and so that meant that Jim and Linda would have to change their address with everyone even if they stayed South Dakota residents.

Being that we now have the double-wide down here in Florida, it seemed kind of silly to change addresses in S.D. and then in a few years change again to FL.

So,  ,   ,  ,  ,  , during the last week or so, they have started to notify businesses, friends and relatives that we are changing to the DeBary address. Then, one of these days, they'll head over to the DMV and get new drivers licenses and make it official. Because we had the double-wide down here, Jim registered Big RED and Nora in Florida when he and Linda bought them, so they're already Florida residents.

When we travel, Jim and Linda have decided to use St. Brendan's Isle Mail Forwarding Services, up in Green Cove Springs, FL for their mail forwarding service. Their service is kind of neat in that you don't have an annual fee, and as part time RVers, we can take advantage of their "Inactive Status" feature, where they will just suspend your service when you don't need it and then re-activate it again when you start traveling. This is at no extra charge and they don't charge anything while you're inactive.

They've been in the mail forwarding business since 1988, so they're well established.

Nothing much else to report except that the weather down here in Florida has been really cold the last few days. As I'm writing this at about 6:00 AM, Jim 's thermometer with the outside remote is saying that it's 29 degrees out there!!!!

Brrrrr!!!!!!!! We're not supposed to have these freezing temperatures in Central Florida!!!!!

One nice thing about Florida weather though is that it doesn't stay cold for very long. On TV their forecasting temperatures up near 80 degrees by Sunday. :-)

Other than Jim going over to the park where Nora is parked to disconnect the water hose and make sure everything was OK for the cold temperatures, he and Linda haven't gone anyplace or done anything. It's supposed to be a little warmer today with not as much wind, so maybe they'll go out to eat or something today.

Normal Things and An Invite

DeBary, FL.

48 deg. Partly cloudy, no wind.
Forecast = A mix of clouds and sun. High 76F. Winds SSE at 10 to 20 mph.

I did it again!!!! :-(  Another whole week since I've posted!!!! I BAD!!!!

There's really not much to report, everything around here has been pretty boring. Oh, there's been the usual things like grocery shopping getting prescriptions refilled and going out to eat at Steak & Shake, but that's about all.

The weather hasn't been real great here in central FL. Some of the nights have been quite cool for this area with temperatures getting down into the mid 30's to low 40's. Yesterday was pretty nice and today is supposed to be nice, but Thursday night they're forecasting lows of 30 degrees!!!

Now, I fully understand that that's not cold by most standards, but when you're used to daytime temperatures in the 70's and lows in the 50's, 30 degrees is really cold!!!!  You also have to understand that most water pipes are not protected from the cold in this area, so if it gets down into the 20's for any length of time, many of them will be freezing.

OK! Enough about the weather.

Roland, (he and Louise are very good friends), called the other day. They have a double-wide down in Frostproof, FL and invited Jim and Linda to a "Wild Hog Cook-Out", on the first of March. You see, Roland and some of the other men from the park that they're in went hog hunting, and since they had good luck, they're inviting a bunch of people to come and partake in a feast!!! :-)  It should be fun and Jim and Linda are planning on going.

Besides that, it's been ages since they've seen Roland and Louise, so It'll be good excuse to go see them and do some catching up on what's been happening. ;-)

A Point to Ponder!!! You can't have everything, where would you put it?

Woof!!!

A Little Busier and Visiting With Glenn, Jeanette, Laura and Lindsey

DeBary, FL.

52 deg.  mostly cloudy, no wind.

Forecast = Mostly cloudy with scattered showers. Highs around 73°F. Light wind. Chance of precipitation 70 percent. New precipitation amounts from one quarter to one half of an inch possible.

It's been a little more busy around here since my last post. Thursday evening, Jim and Linda decided that they wanted Pizza for dinner, so Linda called, (Who else)? Gentile's Pizza and ordered a medium pizza for Jim to pick up. The pizza was ready by the time Jim got to the pizza place and in no time he was backing Big RED back into the car port. :-)

Also on Thursday, Laura called and asked Linda if she'd like to go to see the latest Hobbit movie ( The Battle Of The 5 Armies), that was playing down in Sanford? Linda said that she'd like to see it, so Friday afternoon, Laura swung by, picked Linda up and they headed over there.

Linda said that she and Laura really enjoyed it, and by about 5;00 or so, Laura was dropping Linda back off here at the house.

Saturday was spent sprucing up the house in anticipation of  Glenn and Jeanette coming on Sunday. You know, things like cleaning the bathrooms, straightening things up, dusting and vacuuming.

Sunday, Linda got up early, (about 7:00 AM), and put all the ingredients in the crock pot for the pot roast dinner she had planned. After getting it all together and turned on, she laid back down on the bed and slept some more. I always like it when Linda makes a pot roast, it always smells s o o o o o good! ;-)

The weather was just about perfect for Glenn and Jeanette's visit yesterday, with temps in the middle 70's, lots of sunshine and light winds. Much better than the close to 0 and below temps they've had up in Wisconsin this winter. When Glenn and Jeanette arrived about 3:00 they commented about how great the weather was. :-) Then, after h and h, (hugs and handshakes), and a tour of the house, everyone visited and caught up on what's been happening since they had seen each other, back in July of 2013.

Laura and Lindsey arrived around 4;00 and after more h and h, everyone visited some more.

Jim took this photo of Linda, Laura and Lindsey sitting on the couch

and then Laura took this one of Jim , Linda, Glenn and Jeanette.

The meal went off without a hitch and everyone seemed to really enjoy the dinner Linda prepared. After eating and getting everything cleaned up, there was more visiting until around 8:00. Glenn and Jeanette were tired after a long day and Laura and Lindsey headed home because Lindsey has to get up real early to go to work over by Daytona Beach this morning.

After everyone left, Linda and Jim cleaned up and moved the table back next to the wall. Then they watched TV and fooled around with the computers until bedtime.

It was a very good day, and Linda and Jim really enjoyed seeing Glenn and Jeanette again and having them and Laura and Lindsey over for dinner and to visit.. If everything works out, we may be able to see them again this summer, on our way back from Oregon. ;-)

Did you know that on this date in 1969 - The Boeing 747 flew its inaugural flight?

Another Week Has Gone By

DeBary, FL.

54 deg. mostly cloudy, N. wind @ 5 mph.

Forecast = Showers early, then cloudy in the afternoon. High 72F. Winds ENE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 50%.

Well, another week has gone by since I've posted. :-(  I guess it's because we're in the house this winter and not in an RV that I'm having trouble finding things to write about.. cause other years, it's been sometimes days between post, not a week or more.

Last Wednesday, Jim and Linda took Big RED and went to Gram's Kitchen for dinner. Thursday was grocery shopping day at Winn Dixie, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, absolutely nothing happened except Sunday morning, Jim and Linda went over to Laura and Lindsey's for coffee and doughnuts and to see Ashley, (who was down here from Jacksonville for the day). Other than that, it's been just normal day-to-day living. Then, last night they again took Big RED and headed to dinner, this time at Bob Evans, where they had breakfast for dinner.

Wow!!! Really exciting. Huh????

Of course, now this weekend, there's a conflict about things to do. You see, Sunday, Dave, (one of the Illinois bunch), who is wintering over in Thonotosassa, FL called to invite Jim and Linda over to the annual Fish Fry that they will be having this Sunday. Jim and Linda would have surely gone except Sunday is the day Linda's brother, Glenn and his wife Jeanette are arriving here from Wisconsin.  they actually arrived in Florida yesterday, but landed in Miami and will be heading to Key Largo and other parts of Southern FL. before driving up here to DeBary,

So, Jim and Linda had to tell Dave that they couldn't make it this year. :-(  Isn't that always the way? Nothing happens for a week or more and then two things happen on the same day!!! :-(

It'll be really good to see Glenn and Jeanette though. With Linda's health problems, it's been over a year since we've seen them. It sounds like they'll be getting here sometime during the afternoon, having dinner here with Linda, Jim, Laura and Lindsey and then staying in a hotel in the area before heading to Orlando to catch a flight back to Wisconsin.

Linda already has Sunday's meal planned and all the groceries have been purchased. She's going to try to keep it fairly simple so that she doesn't have to spend time in the kitchen cooking while Glenn and Jeanette are here.

I think she's planning on making a Pot Roast in the slow cooker. :-)

Did you know that In 1951, Diners Club issued the first credit card to 200 customers who could use it at 27 restaurants in New York? But it was only until the establishment of standards for the magnetic strip in 1970 that the credit card became part of the information age.
