The weather change came through as expected and it truly was shock to the system, the first cold weather of the season. Anytime you get a 25 degree drop in the temperatures after having record high temps for quite awhile, you feel it all the way through to your bones. Actually, the weather now is more like what it's really supposed to be like in January down here.
Monday morning, Jim and Linda took Lila and headed over to get Jim's radiation treatment and then headed up to DeLand for Jim's first chemo treatment. Everything went well and it was pretty much as expected. They first met with Dr. Saferali's PA and then Jim was taken into the chemo room. The worst thing about the treatment is that it takes a long time to administer all the different medications through the IV. Some of the meds are preventative to help counteract reactions of the treatment and of course the rest are the treatment meds themselves.
Jim got into the treatment room at about 10:30 and it was right at 3:00 when he and Linda returned to the car.
Jim was feeling fine, so on the way back here so they stopped and bought Lila a well deserved drink of 87 octane. This was the first time she had been filled since she was purchased and both Jim and Linda were well pleased with the 26.7 MPG that she attained, especially since all the miles were driven in town, :-)
For dinner, Jim and Linda again took Lila and headed over to Gram's Kitchen in Orange City. Jim had a fish sandwich and Linda an open faced beef sandwich. Both were very good. :-)
Yesterday, after Jim's radiation treatment the day was spend just kicking back after the busy day on Monday.
So, here's the schedule as of right now. Every Monday through Friday Jim will go to get his radiation treatment at 8;45 in the morning. Every Monday, after his radiation treatment, he will head up to DeLand and receive a chemo treatment that will last until late afternoon. This will go on for about 7 weeks and then, after the last radiation treatment, there will be 2 additional chemo treatments at 21 day intervals.
The treatments should be over by mid- April, but then there will be a recovery period and I'm sure another Pet Scan.
Side effects from chemo are accumulative, so by the end of the treatments, it's hard telling what kind of, or the severity of the side effects will be. As of now, no travel plans are being made for this summer. If we do get to travel, it may only be a short trip up to Illinois, but we'll have to see if that will even be possible.
Did you know that on this date in 1979 - The Y.M.C.A. filed a lawsuit against the Village People over their song, "Y.M.C.A."? The suit was later dropped.

A Certificate For Linda

Everything went well yesterday and by about 9:45 Linda was finished with her last Radiation treatment. As she was leaving the treatment room, she was surprised when one of the technicians gave her a Certificate of completion!!! Jim took a photo of it and I'm hoping that by clicking on the photo to enlarge it, you'll be able to read what it says.
After leaving the Hospital, Jim and Linda decided to go out for Breakfast, so they headed over to the 4 B's Restaurant. :-)
After eating, they came back here to the house so that Linda could take her medications and to relax for awhile. A little later, Jim asked her if she wanted to go over to Highbanks to put more "stuff" away in the travel trailer, but she was too tired, so Jim went over there and worked on it some.

Because of the forecast, he had been watching the weather so when the skies started to look threatening he headed for home. Soon after he returned here to the house, (about 12:15), a cold front came through and it started raining really hard. There was also some wind with the front, but nothing too serious in this area.
If Linda is feeling OK today, I'm sure they'll be back over to the CG to continue organizing the travel trailer. If not, they have quite a bit of time to finish the job.
Here's what's happening medically for the rest of the month. Linda has a Chemo doctor's meeting on the 24th and and probably have a Chemo treatment about a week after that. She also has an appointment to go back to Dr. Graham's, (the radiation doctor), for a follow-up visit on the 30th of April.
A Point to Ponder : Someone who thinks logically provides a nice contrast to the real world.

2 More To Go and Rescheduled

Forecast = Some clouds this morning will give way to generally sunny skies for the afternoon. High 76F. Winds WNW at 10 to 15 mph.
Linda had her Radiation treatment yesterday morning. Being that they were saying that the whole procedure could take as long as 3 hours, Laura went along to keep Linda and Jim company while waiting.
This procedure is more complicated because Linda has to get a scan each time, Dr. Graham, (Linda's radiation doctor), then decides exactly where the treatment should be applied, and then she is taken in and the treatment is preformed. This treatment is very concentrated and takes about 10 or 15 minutes, once everything is set up.
She will have 2 more of these treatments, one on Friday and the final one next Tuesday. After the 3rd one, she will be done with all the radiation treatments.
Then in a week or so will resume Chemo treatments.:-(
Linda said that the treatment wasn't too bad, but last night she did have an uncomfortable sensation in her lower abdomen.
Being that the next radiation treatment will be on Friday, (the day they were supposed to pick up the new travel trailer from LaMesa RV), Jim called the service adviser yesterday afternoon and rescheduled. Now, they'll be picking the trailer up next Monday instead.
It was sure nice of Laura to take one of her days off to go along yesterday. It made the time pass so much quicker.

No big plans for today or tomorrow. A lot will depend on how Linda is feeling.

Learning About Chemo and A Tentative Schedule

Yesterday was "Learn about Chemo Day", so about 9:15 Laura came by and picked up Jim and Linda and they all headed over to the chemo therapist, which isn't in the hospital, but in another medical building in Orange City. It's actually closer than the hospital and probably easier to get to.
After filling out yet another bunch of forms, Linda was finally called in to have a blood test and to meet the doctor who will be overseeing all the treatments. (Jim and Laura were also there when Linda met Dr. Saferali. ) She went through all of the steps of the chemo treatments and talked about treatment procedures and possible side effects. The meeting lasted over an hour and the doctor answered all the questions and concerns that Linda, Jim and Laura had, the best she could.
One of the things about chemo is that each person is different and the treatments effect everyone differently, so there's no "set answers" that will pertain to everyone.
Linda, Jim and Laura all thought that Dr. Saferali was very knowledgeable and were pleased with how she answered all Linda's questions and concerns. They also appreciated that she took as much time with them as needed and she never made them feel like she was rushing through the meeting.
OK, so what's next?? Well, here's what I know so far. On the 6th of December, Linda and Jim, (and possibly Laura if she can make it), will go back to the Chemo office for a "Chemo Patient Education" meeting. She will meet with the nurses that administer the treatment and see the facilities. The nurses will also explain all the procedures and try to explain what will happen while Linda is there.
Then, on the 12th of December, Linda will have her first chemo treatment. She needs to be there at 9:00 AM and the treatment will probably last anywhere from 4 to 6 hours. (probably close to 6 hours because this will be the first treatment). The second treatment will be 21 day later on the 2nd of January, and a third treatment will be 21 days after that.
After the third treatment, there will be about a 2 week waiting period and then Linda will start 8 weeks of Radiation treatment, (5 treatments a week on Monday through Friday for 8 weeks). Then after about another 2 weeks, Linda will again get 3 more Chemo treatments, (again spaced at 21 day intervals).
I haven't figured it out exactly, because the 2 week waiting periods may change between the 2 different types of treatments, but rough figuring brings it to sometime in September before all the treatments will be completed.
After the meeting, Linda, Laura and Jim met Lindsey over at the 4 B's Restaurant and had lunch/breakfast. Then Laura brought Linda and Jim back here to the house, where they relaxed and talked about the upcoming treatments and procedures.
Jim and Linda have had some serious discussions about all of this and how it may/will affect our future. There have not been any decisions made, but major changes may be necessary. Only time will tell though.
