This past week has been spent pretty much getting ready to leave Rantoul and head up to Wisconsin to Linda's family's reunion. On Wednesday, they took Big RED and headed up to Wilmington, IL to talk to their financial advisor in the morning, and then went to Manteno, IL to see Jim's cousin, Adeline. Other than that, they've done some grocery shopping and went out to eat a couple nights.
Of course, Jim checked out Big RED and Nora to make sure both of them were ready for the trip. :-)
Then, this morning, about 10:45, we pulled out of our site at the Prairie Pines CG and started our journey West and North. We took US 136, west out of Rantoul for about 11 miles to IL. 47 where we turned North and followed 47 up to the little town of Forest, IL. There, we turned West again on US 24 and followed it all the way over to I-39. 39 then brought us up to I-80 where we turned East for a few miles and to the Hickoory Hollow Campground near Utica, IL.
It was 1:20 when we pulled up to the office, so it took us right at 2 hours and 35 minutes to stop for fuel for Big RED and travel the 130 miles up here.
Hickory Hollow is a Passport America Park, so we can stay here for 1/2 price, as long as it's not on a Friday or Saturday night. If it wasn't a PPA park, I don't think we'd stay here cause they've raised their rates to $38 or $40 per night, depending on hook-ups. In fact, Jim has already been looking at other parks for our return trip because we'd be getting here on Saturday evening.
Tomorrow morning, we'll be leaving here and head up into Wisconsin. There'll be no need to hurry though cause check in time at the CG where Jim has made reservations up there, isn't until 2:00, and, we only have about 180 miles to go.
So far, it's been a good trip and both Jim and Linda seem to be enjoying being on the road again. ;-) They're both, (especially Linda), looking forward to seeing family again and catching up on what's been happening.

Another Dr. Appointment, A New Lamp, Dinner and A Very Long Day

Tuesday morning, Jim had an eye doctor appointment to have a "field of vision" test done on his eyes. Not to worry though, he passed with flying colors!! .-)
After he was finished with his test at the doctor's office, Big RED took he and Linda over to the Staples Store where they purchased a new lamp to replace the one that had got broken on our trip back from Wisconsin, in August. They had a pretty nice selection of desk lamps and they picked out a black adjustable arm lamp that has a LED bulb. It's not near as attractive as the old one was, but it seems to work well for it's intended purpose.
After purchasing the lamp, they headed over to the LongHorn Steakhouse Restaurant which was just down the street from Staples, for Jim's birthday dinner, . Both Jim and Linda had steaks and they both said that the food was excellent.
After eating, they came back here to the CG and took naps!!! ,-)
Wednesday morning, Jim woke Linda up really early, and by 7:30 Big RED was pulling out of the CG to take them up to Wilmington, IL to see their financial adviser. Wilmington, is about 2 hours North of here so by they time they arrived, it was just about time for their 9:30 appointment. Mr. Shepherd has been advising them for many years and every year, they go over all investments and decide on any changes if necessary.
From the adviser's office, they headed still further North and went to the Big Apple Pancake House in Joliet, IL where they met Linda's sister, Nancy, her son, David and David's nurse, Victoria. After H and K, (Hugs and Kisses), they had a very nice meal with lots of conversation. When they were finished eating, Nancy led Big RED over to her new house where they enjoyed still more catching up on what has been happening during the last year.
It was about 3:30 when they left Nancy's and about 6:00 by they time they returned here to Prairie Pines. A long day, but a very good one!!! :-)
Yesterday was a "catch-up" day and neither Jim or Linda did too much. Both were tired and took naps during the day. ;-)

An Answer To A Comment and A Long But Very Good Day

First of all, I'd like to answer a question to a comment I received yesterday.
Selene & Hank asked how long we would be staying here at Prairie Pines CG because they may be coming to this area? Our plans are to be here until at least the 1st of October to take care of Linda's cataracts and some other personal things. Then, sometime in October, (I don't know just when), we'll head out to the East Coast to see our 2 sons and then head down to FL, getting down there sometime, mid-November.
We'd love to see both of you, so come on by if you can. There'll be plenty of room anytime except the Labor Day weekend and possibly a site aviable even then.
Friday morning, Jim and Linda took Big RED and headed North to Wilmington, IL. The route they took was US 136 from Rantoul to IL-47 West of Fisher. Then they took 47 all the way up to Dwight, IL and then "Historic Route 66" from Dwight to Wilmington.
It was about 90 miles up there, and it took almost 2 hours.
After the meeting with their Financial Adviser, (which lasted almost 2 hours and was very productive), they went across the street to the Chick A Dee Restaurant for a bite to eat. When they finished, they found out that their Financial Adviser had called and told the restaurant that he was picking up the tab!!!

From Wilmington, they headed to Manteno, IL and to Jim's cousin's house. It's only abut 25 miles over there, but because of a detour and the town of Manteno to go through, it took about 45 minutes to get to Adeline's house.
Adeline was very happy to see Jim and Linda and they had a great visit with her, catching up on her life and that of her 2 adult sons and grand kids. She hadn't even heard about Linda's medical problems, so they discussed that too.
About 3:30 after many hugs, Jim and Linda left and headed back down here to the CG. They took all 2 lane roads, county roads and US-45, (rather that I-57), so it took them about 1 hour and 45 minutes to travel the 77 miles from Manteno to here at Prairie Pines.
It ended up being a long day, but a very good and rewarding one. As I said, the meeting in Wilmington went very well and Adeline is doing OK, but she is thinking about moving to an "Assisted Living" facility because at 80 years old, she is starting to have trouble taking care of her house. It was good to see her again and hopefully, Jim and Linda will be able to go and visit her again next year.
Not much happened yesterday. Jim went to the County Market Grocery Store here in Rantoul and picked up some much needed groceries. Then, in the afternoon, he took a nap before cooking a part of a ham steak out on the grill while Linda cooked sweet corn-on-the-cob inside. The evening was spent watching British Comedies on TV.
Today, there are plans to go up to Gilman, IL to meet up with Joe and his family for lunch. Gilman is about 1/2 way between here and Momence, IL where they have been since they stopped by here very early Thursday morning. It'll be just a short visit but at least Linda and Jim will be able to see them again before they head back to Virginia Beach tomorrow. :-)

It's In The Carport

Guess what's sitting in the carport???
Yep!!!! A big, bright, Red, Dodge pick-up!!!!
Jim and Linda couldn't do much Sunday about getting things rolling as far as the new truck was concerned, so they just watched all that football stuff on TV. As you probably know by now, the Football game was a "bust" so they didn't even watch the last part of it.
Monday morning, Linda called their Financial Adviser and put into motion the process of getting some money transferred to the bank. After that, Jim called their insurance agent, told her about the new truck and got the insurance ready to transfer to it.
Then, while Jim was out getting all of the "stuff" out of CLT, Linda spent rest of the day doing a little embroidery work and taking cat naps. :-) That is until about 5:00 when Laura stopped by, picked up Linda and took her to see that new Hobbit movie at a theater over in Altamont Springs. They both enjoyed the movie and by about 10:00 or so, Laura was dropping her back off. ;-) By the time Linda came back into the house, she was really beat and just collapsed in her recliner for the rest of the evening.
Yesterday morning, Linda called the bank to make sure that the money had been transferred. It was, so Jim called Jay, over at Gibson Truck World and told him that he and Linda would be there right after lunch to purchase the truck.
So, about 12:30, they took CLT, stopped at the bank to pick up a cashiers check and headed over there.
It was kind of sad to see CLT pull out of the driveway, knowing that it would be the last time I'd see that little green truck. :-( He's been a really good little truck throughout the years and has served Jim and Linda faithfully since 2005, with hardly any problems at all.
I'll miss you, CLT!!! :-(
Once over to the dealer, the whole process of trading began. Jim says that he can't understand why it takes so long, but it took about 3 hours to get all the T's crossed the the I's dotted. Basically, the whole process went pretty smoothly and by about 4:00, I heard the new truck backing into the carport. (or should I be calling it a truckport)? :-)
I haven't been out there yet, but from what I could see by looking out of the window, it sure looks nice. (Did I mention that it's Red)???? I didn't realize how much bigger it would be than CLT. It sure takes up more room out there than he did!!
Today, Jim wants to go and get a couple spare keys made for the new truck and he'll need to get some of that "stuff" he took out of CLT, put into it. He and Linda also need to do some laundry, so it's looking like it'll be a fairly busy day.
Oh!! The other day, Dave, (one of the Illinois bunch), called. Many of you long-time followers will remember that every year, about this time, he and Dee Dee have a fish fry over at the park in Thonotosassa, (near Tampa). Well, he called to invite Jim and Linda over there for the fish fry this next Sunday. He follows this blog and knows that Linda doesn't have much energy, but he's hoping that they might be able to make it over there again this year.
Linda did pretty well at the dealer yesterday, so she and Jim are hoping that by the weekend, she'll be feeling well enough to go. It would be a nice drive over there to see good friends and also be a good excuse to take the new truck for a nice long drive to see how it performs. (It's about 100 miles over there).
Who knows, maybe I could even ride along!! ;-)

Catching Up On The Trip To Kankakee
Rantoul, IL.

We're back from our little jaunt up to Kankakee. We didn't have an Internet signal that was unusable at the State Park up there, so today, I'll try to get you caught up.
Monday, after dumping the tanks and getting a few last minute things done, we pulled out of the Prairie Pines CG about 10:20 and headed North on US 45. 45 parallels I-57 and was a major highway back before Interstate Highways. We followed 45 up to Ashkum where detour signs directed us over to I-57. 57 then brought us up and around Kankakee and to IL Rt. 50. Rt. 50 took us South to Armor Rd, which took us west to IL Rt. 102, which took us along the Kankakee River and to the Kankakee River State Park.
It was 12:05 and we had traveled 76 miles when we pulled into the Potawatomi Campground section. Then, after registering, we drove to the Oak loop section where Jim backed Bobbie T into site #6.

Site #6 was nice and level, had 50 amp electric, some shade, and like all the sites, a picnic table and a fire ring.
To be honest, neither Jim or Linda really cared too much what the site was like because they knew that they weren't going to be spending much time there, as this trip was to take care of some business and to visit with family and friends.
Tuesday morning, Jim and Linda took CLT and headed to Wilmington, IL, where they had a meeting with their financial advisor. After discussing some options and making a few small changes to their investments, they drove over to the Chick A Dee Restaurant and had breakfast for lunch.
After lunch, they drove to Peotone, Il, (the town where Jim and Linda used to live), and went to the cemetery, East of town, where Jim's parents are buried as well as many of his ancestors.
After spending almost 2 hours, driving/walking around in the cemetery and finding and taking photos of almost all of the graves, they headed over to Denny and Bev's house in town.
As many of you know, Denny and Bev are 1/3 of the "Illinois Bunch" that Jim and Linda usually go to visit in Tampa, FL every winter, and, who usually come here to the Prairie Pines CG in Rantoul, when we're here in the summer.
Jim and Denny lived about a block apart when they were kids, so have been friends for many, many years. They always seem to enjoy each other's company and always enjoy visiting.
Bev ordered a Pizza for dinner and after eating, visiting some more and h and h, (hugs and handshakes), Jim and Linda returned to the State Park.
Wednesday Jim and Linda took CLT and headed to Monee, IL to see Jim's cousin, Adeline. She lost her husband a couple years ago, and really enjoys seeing, "Jimmy" and Linda. ; ) After having lunch with Adeline and visiting for awhile, they headed over to Momence, IL. to visit with Barb.
Barb is a long time friend of both Jim and Linda's. She lived down in Florida for awhile, and some of you long time readers may remember Jim and Linda going to visit her at her house down there. After visiting for awhile, they all took Barb's car and headed to a family style restaurant in Momence and enjoyed a nice dinner and more visiting.
After eating, there were more hugs and then Jim and Linda came back to the State Park.
Yesterday morning, we left the Kankakee State Park about 10:00, retraced our route to I-57 and then brought 57 all the way down here to Rantoul. When we got into Rantoul, Jim pulled Bobbie T into a Casey's Gas Station and filled her up with 87 octane before returning here to Prairie Pines.
It was 11:55 when we pulled back into site #7 and we had traveled 77 miles. and stopped for gas.
All in all, it was a very good trip. Everything was accomplished that Jim and Linda wanted to do, and they got to see and visit with some very good friends and family.

Making Plans

Not much been going on here at the Prairie Pines CG lately, but yesterday, Jim and Linda sat down and talked about what they wanted / needed to get accomplished while we're here. Well, one thing led to another and soon they were on the phone, calling friends and relatives in the Kankakee / Peotone area to see when they would be available for visits.
It soon became apparent that next week would work the best for everyone, so they called their financial advisor (the need to do thing), and made an appointment with him for next Tuesday. Then, after figuring which days would be best to stop and see the different people that they wanted to visit with, they called everyone back and set up days and approximate times when it would work the best for everyone.
Now, by this time, I'm sure that you've realized that this had turned into a multiple day thing. Being that it's somewhere between 80 and 100 miles, (one way), up there from here, it just didn't make any sense to go back and forth 2 or 3 days in a row. So, it was decided that the best thing to do would be to take Bobbie T up to the Kankakee area for 2 or 3 nights and do the visiting / business on day trips from there.
Being that we would be there for only 3 or 4 nights and it would be in the middle of the week, it was decided that the best place to stay would be the Kankakee River State Park, which is right on the Kankakee River, just a little NW of Kankakee.
Even though Jim and Linda lived in that area for many years and they did go to the park many times for picnics and to just relax by the river, they never went camping there, so it will be a new experience for all of us! ; ) By all accounts, it should be pretty nice, especially since we won't be there on the weekend when it can get crowded.
So, that's Plan A. We'll leave here next Monday and spend 2 or 3 nights at the State Park and then Thursday or Friday, after all the business and visiting is taken care of, we'll come back down here to Rantoul, where we'll stay until after the 4th of July weekend.

Not much been going on here at the Prairie Pines CG lately, but yesterday, Jim and Linda sat down and talked about what they wanted / needed to get accomplished while we're here. Well, one thing led to another and soon they were on the phone, calling friends and relatives in the Kankakee / Peotone area to see when they would be available for visits.
It soon became apparent that next week would work the best for everyone, so they called their financial advisor (the need to do thing), and made an appointment with him for next Tuesday. Then, after figuring which days would be best to stop and see the different people that they wanted to visit with, they called everyone back and set up days and approximate times when it would work the best for everyone.
Now, by this time, I'm sure that you've realized that this had turned into a multiple day thing. Being that it's somewhere between 80 and 100 miles, (one way), up there from here, it just didn't make any sense to go back and forth 2 or 3 days in a row. So, it was decided that the best thing to do would be to take Bobbie T up to the Kankakee area for 2 or 3 nights and do the visiting / business on day trips from there.
Being that we would be there for only 3 or 4 nights and it would be in the middle of the week, it was decided that the best place to stay would be the Kankakee River State Park, which is right on the Kankakee River, just a little NW of Kankakee.
Even though Jim and Linda lived in that area for many years and they did go to the park many times for picnics and to just relax by the river, they never went camping there, so it will be a new experience for all of us! ; ) By all accounts, it should be pretty nice, especially since we won't be there on the weekend when it can get crowded.
