It's a good thing that Jim still has that big eraser cause he and Linda have made some big changes in this summer's travel plans!!!
Let me explain.
You see, Jim has been stressing out about the planed trip out to Portland, Oregon this summer. He's mostly worried about his stamina holding up for such a long trip where we'd be traveling almost every day with a 2 day stay once in awhile. He seems to be doing fine, but his energy level isn't what it should be and he gets tired more easily. When he drove over to the Tampa area and back for Dave and Dee Dee's fish fry, a little over a week ago, he was really beat by the time they returned here to DeBary and he didn't even feel like doing anything the next day.
So, , , , , he and Linda sat down and had a discussion about what they should do. It was decided that we wouldn;t go to Oregon this year, but would go up to Illinois again this summer and plan to head to Oregon in 2018. :-( This wasn't an easy decision because, as you might surmise, both Jim and Linda's past health problems might again pop up and mess up any future travel plans.
But, they still decided that a very long trip this summer wasn't a very good idea.
Jim called Jeff, who lives in Portland, and of course he was disappointed, but understood and agreed that it probably wasn't a good idea for Jim to try to make the long trip out there. In fact, he suggested that possibly, he might be able to come to Illinois this summer, (like he and Heather did last summer), and spend some time in Rantoul with us. :-)
So, we'll leave here sometime between the middle of April and the first 1st May and take our time going up to Illinois. Not sure yet if we'll be going up to North Carolina and Virginia Beach before heading to Illinois or not, but there's plenty of time to decide. I'll let you know what the plans are as soon as I know.

We're OK and Thanks For Inquireing

Forecast tonight = Clear skies. Low 43F. Winds light and variable. Brrrrrrr!!!!!
Last Friday, the rain started and it didn't quit until early Sunday morning. Saturday, it rained really hard all day and along with the rain, we had some pretty strong winds in the 30 to 40 mph range with gusts into the mid 50 mph range. How much did it rain, you ask? Well I really don't know cause Jim's rain gauge only goes up to 4 inches and it started running over, sometime during the day on Saturday. :-O We kept electric power the whole time, except for a few blinks, but much of the area around us lost power, and in fact some are still without electricity.
There's flooding everywhere from here to the coast and many cities are completely swamped and underwater. Many roads are closed, including I-95 and I-40 in the SE part of N. Carolina.
Wednesday, we're scheduled to leave here and head for Virginia Beach, but we talked to Linda's son, Joe, and they don't have any electricity, so we're going to head up to Roanoke Rapids and stay at an RV Park there for a few days. Then, we'll see where we go from there. Hopefully power will be restored in VA Beach and we can continue with our plans.
Jim and Linda want to thank all of you who commented, called or e-mailed them in the last few days and asked about our welfare. We're fine, and weathered the storm without any problems. It got a little scary a few time, but Nora did very well.
I don't know what we'll be doing after we go to Joe's. Myrtle Beach, SC., (where we have reservations at a CG), was also hit really hard and as of now, we don't even know if the CG is in operation or not, or if we can even get to Myrtle Beach or not.
So, again, it's good that all of our plans are written in pencil and that Jim still has that big eraser!! ;-)

It's Been Awhile Again

Tomorrow = Partly cloudy in the morning followed by scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. High 87F. Winds light and variable.
It's been awhile again and I hope I can remember what's all happened since I last posted.
Let's see now!!! On the 19th, Linda had appointment with her primary care doctor. All went well and except for still having to get a blood test, (scheduled for this Friday), she was given a good report.
On the 21st, Jeff, (Jim's son from Portand, OR.) called to say that he and Heather would be flying to Illinois for a short visit and that he and Heather would like to come here to the CG on the 12th of September to visit!!!! It's been about 4 years since we've seen them, so it'll be really great to see them, even if it is for only part of 1 day!!!!
On the 23rd, Jim had an appointment at Dr. Gandhi's office to get a scan of his optic nerves preformed. Since then he has heard from the Dr.'s office that all is well, and his glaucoma seems to be under control.
On the 25th, Jim and Linda took Big RED and headed up to Peotone, IL to see Denny and Bev, (part of the "Illinois Bunch"). They have decided to sell their Winnebago Brave Motorhome because of health problems that will not allow them to travel anymore. :-( That's too bad, we've always enjoyed their visits here to the CG when we were here. They really enjoyed seeing them again and are looking forward to seeing them again in years to come.
The weather around here hasn't been too great!! :-( We've had temperatures in the upper 80's to low 90's with high humidity. When it wasn't too hot to sit outside, the bugs would drive you inside, either that or it was raining, with lots of thunder and lightning. In fact it's rained so much that we're close to setting a rainfall record for the month of August in Illinois.
The weather guessers are saying that the weather should improve for the upcoming Labor Day weekend though. As of Thursday they're forecasting cooler temps and lower humidity and are guessing that it will stay pretty nice throughout the holiday.
I hope so!!!!
That pretty much brings us up-to-date. Dave and Dee Dee, (another part of the "Illinois Bunch" are planning on coming here to the CG on or about the 8th of September. That should be fun.
Jim has been working on a trip plan for when we leave here and head, first out East and then down to Florida. It now looks like we'll be leaving here on the 21st of September, getting to Mike's, (near Raleigh), on the 28th, Joe's (in Virginia Beach), on the 13th of October, Myrtle Beach on the 26th and arriving back at the house on or about the 1st of November.
As always, this is all written in pencil and yes, Jim still has the big eraser!! ;-)

Yep!!! You guessed it!!!! Another change of our travel plans!!!!
Oh well, Jim does have that big eraser and he put it to good use again yesterday when we woke up to wind howling through the CG and Nora shaking on her stabilizer jacks! :-(
So, , , , , , , , after talking it over and checking a couple weather guesses on the computer and on TV, Jim and Linda decided it was in everyone's best interest to stay here and "hunker down" for another day. Especially since the wind was out of the SW and we would be going SE, (the wind would be hitting Nora broadside), with predicted gusts of anywhere from 30 to 40 mph!!! :-O
Jim went over and checked with Louise to make sure it was OK for us to stay another night and then came back here and re-connected the water hose so he and Linda wouldn't have to run off of the fresh water tank's supply. Linda called her cousin in Indy to see of he and his wife were able to visit for awhile today instead of yesterday, (he said that they had no plans for today, so it didn't make any difference), and then unpacked a few items that she and Jim would need for an additional day.
Now, we'll have to change how long we'll be staying at one of our planned stops along the way, but that shouldn't be too difficult cause at 2 of the parks/campgrounds, we were planning on staying 2 nights, so now, we'll only be staying for one night at one of them.

Excitement At The Apache CG and Leaving Early On Saturday
Williamston, NC.

Forecast = Cloudy with occasional rain...mainly in the morning. High 56F. Winds NNE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 50%.
Friday was another beautiful day at Myrtle Beach, (All of the days we spent there were very nice, but cool,) Being that it was our last day there, it was decided that we'd just hang out and enjoy the ocean view and sounds.
Well, all of that went according to plan until mid afternoon when all of a sudden there was a loud "woomp" sound outside and then a "crack" and "bang"!!!!!
Jim looked outside just in time to see the big fancy 5th wheel across the street from us being hit by the rear end of a large travel trailer, that was trying to make a swing to get into position to back into a site.
It's the "Elite Sweets" 5th wheel in the photo above which is one site down and across the street from Nora.
Well, in a few minutes many people were over there and it soon became apparent that more than likely the 5th wheel had sustained some major damage. Besides the front cap of the trailer being broken and pushed in, the hitch being hit with the lip bent up, the whole trailer was knocked off of the approximately 6 inch high blocks that were under it's front hydraulic jacks/stands.
This trailer has a 6 point leveling/stabilizing system, so that when the front jacks were knocked off of the blocks, all the weight of the front of the trailer was transferred to the jacks under the middle of the trailer. Because the trailer was pushed sideways, these jacks were bent off to the side and hopefully just the jack brackets were bent and not the main trailer frame that they attach to.
There was also a crack in the fiberglass on the far side of the trailer where the overhang of the front of the trailer attaches to the main part.
The people who own the trailer were out on the beach at the time, so no one was inside and no one got hurt. I guess that was the most important thing, but I strongly expect that the 5th wheel trailer has some major damage, possibly to it's frame, which just might total it out!!! :-(
Some men came later in the day and got the trailer re-leveled and stabilized. I don't know if the people who own the trailer stayed in it Friday night or not. Insurance companies were called and now it's up to what they find. I really feel bad for the owners of this beautiful trailer. :-(
The other trailer was damaged quite a bit too, but I couldn't see the extent because soon after the accident, they moved it farther down the street and into it's site to get it out of the roadway so others could pass.
The original plan was to leave Myrtle Beach around 10:00 or so on Saturday morning and head up to North Topsail Beach, North Carolina and spend a few days up there. Well, because of the weather forecast of rain most of this weekend, Jim got out that big eraser of his again and plans were changed. ;-)
Both he and Linda decided that instead of stopping at North Topsail, they'd just go ahead and skip that stop and drive all the way up here to Williamston instead. Now, this would mean a fairly long day for us, but Jim knew the road and decided that it wouldn't be too much over the 3 to 4 hours that we normally travel.
So, being that rain was forecasted to start mid to late morning, they got up early and started packing things up and by 7:45, we were pulling out of the Apache Family CG in a light drizzle.
Once back on US 17 we followed it up through North Myrtle Beach, into North Carolina and up here to Williston NC and to the Pierce Mobile Home and Travel Trailer Park. It was 236 miles from Myrtle Beach up to here and it too us about 4 hours and 45 minutes to make the trip. (including one "pit stop" along the way. :-)
This was a long travel day for us, but we did run out of the light rain about an hour North of Myrtle Beach. The rest of the trip was under overcast skies on a fairly good road and not a whole lot of traffic being that it was a Saturday morning.
OH, just one more thing. about 45 minutes after we were in our site and set up, the skies opened up and it rained for most of the rest of the afternoon and evening.
I'm sure glad we left as early as we did, or it would have been pretty miserable setting up in the rain.
We're staying here for 2 nights and that will put us at Joe and Nancy's house on Monday instead of Tuesday, but Linda called them and they said that they were happy that we'd be getting there earlier than planned.
I know that this post has gotten quite long, so I'll quit for now. It's only about a 100 miles from here to Virginia Beach and the weather is forecasted to be nice for tomorrow, so it should be an easy trip. ;-)

Callahan To DeBary, FL. and One More Night In Nora
DeBary, FL.

Forecast = Partly cloudy. High 63F. Winds N at 10 to 15 mph.
We pulled out of Kelly's Countryside RV Park at about 10:15 and continued South on US 301 to Callahan. There, 301 turned SW and we followed US 1 on down to I-295, which took us around the SW side of Jacksonville. South of the city, we turned South on US 17 and that brought us all the way down here to DeBary and the Highbanks Marina & Camp Resort.
We stopped briefly for a "pit stop" but other than that, it was pretty smooth going all the way. It was 150 miles down here and even with the stop and the fairly heavy traffic when we first turned off of 395 and onto US 17, we still made it in only 3 hours and 10 minutes.
Jim didn't care for the site that they had chosen to put us on, so he talked to the manager and was able to persuade him to switch us to a different site that was a little better. It's still not the "ideal" site, but being that we won't be spending a real lot of time here at the park, it'll suffice.
Jim paid for 1 month here with the option to keep Nora here for the whole season if he and Linda decided that they want to. That's still to be decided though, they may want to look at a different park, put Nora in storage, or keep her here, so that they can come here to "camp out" whenever they want.
Which is what they were thinking of doing when they reserved a site here.
By the time Nora was in the site and set up, Jim was pretty tired and then Laura and Lindsey came over to welcome us back here, so he and Linda didn't even go over to the house. Instead, they decided to go to Arby's to get a sandwich and then just come back here, relax and spend one more night in Nora.
This morning, they'll head over to the house, unload the back of Big RED and then come back here and start loading things up that they'll need at the house. Eventually, they'd like to have doubles of many if the items so that they don't have to move a lot of stuff back and forth every time they want to spend a few nights here at the park.
So, how long will be be down here in Florida? Well, the plan, which is written in pencil, (and Jim still has that big eraser), is that we'll be here until the middle of April. Then we'll start heading North again, probably going to see the boys again in Virginia and North Carolina before heading to a RV-Dreams Family Reunion Rally in Marion, NC the end of May.

We stopped briefly for a "pit stop" but other than that, it was pretty smooth going all the way. It was 150 miles down here and even with the stop and the fairly heavy traffic when we first turned off of 395 and onto US 17, we still made it in only 3 hours and 10 minutes.
Jim didn't care for the site that they had chosen to put us on, so he talked to the manager and was able to persuade him to switch us to a different site that was a little better. It's still not the "ideal" site, but being that we won't be spending a real lot of time here at the park, it'll suffice.
Jim paid for 1 month here with the option to keep Nora here for the whole season if he and Linda decided that they want to. That's still to be decided though, they may want to look at a different park, put Nora in storage, or keep her here, so that they can come here to "camp out" whenever they want.
Which is what they were thinking of doing when they reserved a site here.
By the time Nora was in the site and set up, Jim was pretty tired and then Laura and Lindsey came over to welcome us back here, so he and Linda didn't even go over to the house. Instead, they decided to go to Arby's to get a sandwich and then just come back here, relax and spend one more night in Nora.
This morning, they'll head over to the house, unload the back of Big RED and then come back here and start loading things up that they'll need at the house. Eventually, they'd like to have doubles of many if the items so that they don't have to move a lot of stuff back and forth every time they want to spend a few nights here at the park.
So, how long will be be down here in Florida? Well, the plan, which is written in pencil, (and Jim still has that big eraser), is that we'll be here until the middle of April. Then we'll start heading North again, probably going to see the boys again in Virginia and North Carolina before heading to a RV-Dreams Family Reunion Rally in Marion, NC the end of May.

North Topsail Island, NC To Myrtle Beach, SC, The Apache CG and Plotting A New Course
Myrtle Beach, SC

Forecast = Partly cloudy skies this morning will give way to occasional showers during the afternoon. High near 70F. Winds S at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 40%.
Tuesday morning, about 10:05, we left the Surf City Family CG on Topsail Island and headed back to US 17 on NC 210. It wasn't far and soon we were heading in a Southerly direction on 17. There was quite a bit of traffic and I'm guessing that ti was because it was Veterans Day and quite a few folks had the day off of work. The traffic moved along nicely though and soon we were crossing into South Carolina and going through North Myrtle Beach.
I watched for Vanna White as we drove through the town, but didn't see her. ;-)
Soon we were in Myrtle Beach and turning off of US 17 onto Lake Arrowhead Road which brought us to the Apache Family Campground. It was 12:20 when we pulled up in front of the office, so we drove the 106 miles down here in about 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Not too bad considering the heavier than normal traffic and the 10 miles of city driving in SC before we arrived here at the park.
We've been to the Apache Family CG before and like before, it didn't disappoint. Like I said Tuesday, Jim had reserved one of the new "premium" sites and I do believe that it's worth the extra cost.
As most of you know, there's a cold front sweeping across the country and it's supposed to get here to Myrtle Beach today, so, Tuesday afternoon and yesterday, Jim and Linda didn't do anything but enjoy the great mid 70's temperatures and sunny skies that we were having. Part of the time they were inside of Nora, looking out of the windows and door and part of the time they sat outside under Nora's awning, enjoying sound of the surf, the gentle breeze, clear skies and warm temperatures, not to mention the great view!!! ;-)
Oh, and at night? Well, there's a restaurant out on the big pier that is part of the park and they light the whole thing up. Here's a couple photos taken at different times of the evening. Sorry they're a little blurry but I think they're kind of neat.
Today, Jim and Linda have some shopping to do. They need to go to Walgreen's and pick up a few items, Jim would kind of like to swing over to the Camping World store here in Myrtle Beach, Linda would like to look for a few Christmas presents, and if it's not raining, they're planning on going out to eat.
Well, Jim has found that big eraser again. :-O Being that the weather is supposed to turn really cold, he and Linda have decided that it may be wise to take a shorter, quicker route down to Florida from here. So yesterday afternoon, he started erasing and plotting a new course. Now, instead of taking 3 days to get down to Northern Florida, we'll be down there with just a one night stopover and we'll probably be getting to DeBary on the 18th or 19th rather than on the 20th.
Did you know that The City of Myrtle Beach is in the center of the Grand Strand, a 60-mile crescent of beach on the South Carolina coast? In the last 25 years, Myrtle Beach has developed into the premier resort destination on the East Coast.
Oh, and just one more thing!!! Linda wants to thank everyone who commented on this blog or called or e-mailed to congratulate her for her achievement the other day. Thank You!!!!!

Finalizing Plans and Laundry Day

Jim's been working on finalizing a plan for our upcoming trip. Of course, it still depends on the 2 eye doctor visits that Linda will have this coming week, but since Linda hasn't been experiencing any discomfort, vision problems or anything else with her eyes, we should be able to leave here on the 6th of October as planned. :-)
One thing that Jim has found is that, at this time of the year, (especially in the Smoky Mountain area of Tennessee and North Carolina), there are a lot of "leaf peepers" out and about. In fact after doing some research, he found that many of the campgrounds in that area are booked up already. So, , , , , even though he and Linda don't like to be tied to a schedule, he did make a reservation at one RV Park.
Yesterday, Jim and Linda finally did the laundry!!! They left here a little before noon and by about 1:30 they were back from the laundromat with clean clothes! :-) Being that the machines there are quite large, they were able to get it all done in 3 loads and then by using one very large dryer and one regular sized one, they were able to get it all washed and dried fairly quickly.
No big plans for today. It's supposed to be real nice today, so Jim will probably be spending some time outside. Going over to the laundromat and doing the laundry yesterday kind of wore Linda out, so we'll have to see how she's feeling today. Sometime before long, she needs to go to Walgreen's to pick up some things, and I know she'd like to do a little shopping down in Champaign before we leave here.

Good News, Next Appointments and What Does This Mean?

Forecast = Mostly sunny. Highs around 72°F. Northeast wind to 7 MPH.
It was about 10:45 when Big RED pulled out of the campground and took Linda and Jim down to the South side of Champaign for Linda's follow-up appointment after the cataract surgery on her right eye. The appointment to see Dr. Anderson was at 11:30 and Big RED said that they made there with time to spare.
The follow-up went fine and after some vision tests and her looking into Linda's eyes, Dr. Anderson said that both eyes were doing well and that she wanted to see Linda once more in about 2 weeks. ;-)
Good News!!!!!
OK, now let's see what this means.
Linda's appointment with Dr. Gandhi, (the retinaologist), is on the the 30th of September, so that means that for the next 12 days, there are no doctor appointments at all!!!!
Then, 2 days later, on the 2nd of October, Linda has the appointment with Dr. Anderson.
If everything goes well at that appointment, we'll be "good to go" as early as the 3rd of September!!!!
That means that we'll be able to leave here about a week earlier than originally planned, which will mean that we won't have to hurry or cut short our visits with Mike or Joe and their families. It also means that we'll be able to take our time heading down the coast on our way to FL and if Roland and Louise are still at their house in North Carolina, we can stop by there for a few days to visit!!!
And, you know what else it means??? Linda will not have a Doctor's appointment for as many as 45 days!!!!! That has not happened for more than a year!!!!
So, , , , , , , , , in the next few days I expect Jim to be getting out that big eraser again and making a new plan for our trip. (I think this will be "Plan D") ;-) As soon as he gets it penciled in on the calendar, I'll fill you in on our "tentative" schedule.
